Cashier Supervisor

The business of Mahoney's Garden Centers is distinctly influenced by seasons of the year.  In all cases, each store location has its own unique needs relative to these seasons. The preferred candidate should have a basic understanding or quickly become familiarized of product categories and services offered through basic training, and has the ability to share this knowledge with our clients by suggesting products and merchandise that will meet the client’s needs.

The primary function of this position is responsible for overseeing all cashier functions including but not limited to POS training, customer service training, scheduling, communicating policy & system changes, supervising & delegating duties.

  • Preparing the cashier schedule on a weekly basis and submit for review
  • Train cashiers in all aspects of their job and give them a thorough introduction to the cashier manual – this includes all company policies and POS procedures
  • Train cashiers to take complete and accurate orders
  • Get proper approval on refunds & returns when necessary
  • Make cashiers aware of theft and preventative measures
  • Reiterate procedures & policies as problems arise
  • Keep cashiers informed of all sales and specials (This Week at Mahoney’s) as well as new coupons and new procedures
  • Expected to know the procedures to follow when the register fail
  • Supervise cashiers at all times
  • Interact with customers and maintain a friendly and helpful manner at all times
  • Teach cashiers customer service skills
  • Co-ordinate with each department on busy days to reduce customer lines at POS
  • Handle cashier sick calls and scheduling problems & keep Store Controller informed of all scheduling changes
  • Deal with any conflicts that arise with the cashiers & keep Store Controller informed of any problems
  • Handle returns, voids, and problems at/on registers
  • Supply change for cashiers
  • Keep an overall inventory of supplies i.e. register tape, invoice paper, toner, pens, pencils, tape, staples, rewards cards/forms, gift cards etc.
  • Gather returns on a daily basis
  • Keep registers and surrounding area clean and organized
  • Keep registers covered at all times when not in use
  • Make sure all cash drawers are left open when not in use
  • Be prepared at any time to open a register to relieve long lines
  • Train cashiers to maintain displays & product at POS
  • Notify Store Controller of any equipment malfunctions or necessary repairs
  • Perform other related duties as required



  • Two years retail cashier experience
  • Prior supervisory experience is preferred
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs. of plants or other materials
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing to individuals at all levels.
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail in handling all paperwork, understands paperwork flow.
  • Appropriately delegates tasks and uses time well.
  • Works independently, solves problems effectively, is resourceful when questions or challenges arise.
  • Accepts and capably performs additional responsibilities assigned by Management.

Work Environment

This job operates in an indoor and outdoor retail business environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers and phones. You must be willing and able to serve in any weather condition, out of doors. No travel required.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing repetitively throughout the entire shift. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items that weigh up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work vary by schedule. Evening and weekend work required as schedule demands.
