Work Hours: 40 hours per week with seasonal overtime as needed

Mahoney’s offers top-quality plants and supplies to meet the needs of both home gardeners and landscape professionals equipped with a 10,000 square foot greenhouse and substantial seasonal inventory turnover.

Job Description:

  • Under the direct supervision of the upper-level management of the Mahoney’s Group of Companies, the Garden Center Manager will assist in the growing and retail operations of Mahoney’s garden centers.
  • Ensure timely and efficient greenhouse and nursery production, including outdoor nurseries for container grown perennials, and pot crops for retail, including annual ornamental plants, vegetable and herb starts, and other perennial plants.
  • Ensure information is correct and current regarding plant materials and/or related product to include: essential requirements for water, light exposure, soil’s pH level, temperature, hardiness zone, space requirements, crop timing, nutrition and/or N-P-K ratio, and disease control to maintain quality of plants.
  • Assign work schedules for growers and crew members for all necessary production tasks.
  • Execute and oversee all planting, irrigation, fertilization, pest control, spacing, pruning, and sanitation, including coordinating incoming plant materials and supplies and ensuring proper and timely movement of plants from production to retail, checking supplies inventory, record-keeping for inventory, production techniques, and disease and pest control interventions.
  • Maintain greenhouse equipment, including operating planters, forklifts, and potting machines.
  • Coordinate shipping from outside growing operations and receiving at retail locations.
  • Assist with sales to customers at retail locations, sharing knowledge of how to care for and use the types of plants purchased, and ensure the retail displays are effective.

Travel: Incidental domestic travel to other Mahoney’s locations in Massachusetts on an as needed basis.

Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Science, Horticulture or related field (foreign equivalent is acceptable) plus eight (8) months of employment or internship experience in crop growing operations.

Required experience must include:

  • Advanced knowledge of growing mediums and growing seasons, plant propagation, and plant care to include watering requirements, light exposure, soil pH level, temperature, hardiness zone, space requirements, crop timing, nutrition and/or N-P-K ratio and disease control.
  • Advanced knowledge of quality control of plant growing products.
  • Advanced knowledge of marketing theories and practices for crops.
  • Advanced knowledge of crop growing technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience in assisting with greenhouse production.
